Putting the "Giving" into the "Thanks"
Today is the day many of us shout "Happy Thanksgiving"
As it is with all holidays there are some who will struggle through this day and others for various reasons. I don't want to talk about that today but I do want to acknowledge these people and let them know that they are not alone and they are loved. I am thankful for each and every person I know and those I don't know either. Together we make this world amazing. It isn't perfect, not by a long shot, but it is incredible and I thank you all for that.
What I DO want to talk about is being thankful. But I want to think of it from a different perspective than perhaps what we are used to. On this day we often make lists of the things we are thankful for. I love this exercise because to me it makes me even more aware of all the good things in my life and all the great people who enrich the world and myself every day. I try to be thankful every day of the year but it is good to have a day to really focus hard on being grateful for all that I have.
But today, perhaps before or after you've done your normal thank you's, I'd like everyone to try something else. I want you to make a list of the things you are grateful to do for OTHER people. What are the things that you are thankful for that you can give to others? What are the things that you are able to do for others? First think of the things that you do give and that you do do and list them. Then I ask that you make the list of things that you are able to give and able to do but you haven't yet done. Be thankful for the things that you have given and done and then be thankful that there is so much more that you can and will do. We can use this holiday not only to look back on what has already happened in our lives but to look forward to what we can make happen in our world. This is the kind of thing we do out of love. This is how we #LoveMore. Happy Thanksgiving everybody. I love you! <3
